Chambolle-musigny
FollowThe most perfumed and delicate of Burgundy's red wine villages, Chambolle-Musigny produces Pinot Noir of extraordinary finesse. Its wines—described as "iron fist in velvet glove"—combine ethereal aromatics with surprising structure.
Chambolle-Musigny produces Burgundy's most feminine wines, yet this description belies their underlying power. The village contains two Grand Crus: Musigny (one of Burgundy's greatest, rivaling Romanée-Conti) and Bonnes-Mares (shared with Morey, more structured and earthy).
The village's character comes from its unique position. Chambolle sits in a natural amphitheater protected by the Combe d'Orveau, where limestone soils are thinner and more active than elsewhere on the Côte. The wines show exceptional aromatic lift—roses, violets, wild strawberries—while maintaining remarkable aging potential.
Musigny is the summit: a wine of haunting delicacy that somehow ages for decades. It's the only Grand Cru on the Côte de Nuits that can legally produce white wine, though Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier's tiny production of Musigny Blanc has been unavailable for years.
The Premier Crus are superb, led by Les Amoureuses (widely considered Grand Cru quality), Les Charmes, and Les Fuées. Even village Chambolle from good producers captures the appellation's signature perfume and silk.
