Côte de Nuits

The Côte de Nuits runs for just 20 kilometers from Marsannay south to Corgoloin, yet this slender ribbon of vines produces the world's most coveted Pinot Noir. Nearly every Grand Cru for red wine in Burgundy lies within its boundaries. The geography is remarkably consistent: a single east-facing escarpment where the best vineyards occupy the mid-slope sweet spot—high enough for drainage and sun exposure, low enough to avoid the forest's cold air. Limestone bedrock, covered by varying depths of marl and clay, creates the subtle variations that define each village's character. From north to south, the villages tell a story of Pinot Noir's many faces: Gevrey-Chambertin (power and structure), Morey-Saint-Denis (often overlooked elegance), Chambolle-Musigny (perfume and silk), Vougeot (the historic Clos), Vosne-Romanée (complexity and depth), and Nuits-Saint-Georges (earthy robustness). The Grand Crus—Chambertin, Musigny, Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Clos de Vougeot—represent the pinnacle of Pinot Noir expression, commanding prices that reflect their scarcity and near-mythical status.
