Tom Rinaldi is the man behind this exceptional wine, and he’s the one responsible for industry stalwarts Duckhorn and Provenance. Patent is his own personal project, where he’s taking a focused approach to winemaking, working with select blocks from choice sites around Napa Valley.

He’s a master at the craft, and that’s on display here. This young Cab is approachable and fruit-forward in style, with copious amounts of black plum, boysenberry, and black cherry up front. Soft, polished, and approachable, his approach emphasizes the freshness and fruit; the 75% new French Oak works in the background adding just the right amount of spice, vanilla and light toastiness.

94 Points – Decanter “This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, crafted by Tom Rinaldi—renowned for his legendary tenure as the winemaker at Duckhorn Vineyards— was sourced from the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley and aged for 22 months in 75% new French oak. With a limited production of just 530 cases, this wine is a testament to Rinaldi's decades of winemaking expertise. Despite the massive heat wave after Labour Day, this wine showcases Rinaldi's mastery over the vintage, offering a dark-fruited, savoury, and balanced expression. It is tension-filled, with long, robust tannins forming a solid foundation for the rich, dark-toned fruit that retains a surprising lightness and vibrancy. The tannins reassert themselves on the finish, building intensity and delivering full-bodied richness.
