2018 Champagne Barons de Rothschild 'Triptyque' Extra Brut
From the Seller
More Rothschild Champagne?! Say what?!
That’s right – the opportunity to party like a Rothschild, the family behind Lafite, Mouton, and Opus One, continues into the afterhours....with their new, innovative vintage Champagne.
Meet Triptyque! Once again, a gang of 93 point scores from the pros. This time FOUR of em! And while the discount isn't as steep, it's rare to see ANY discount on baller bubbles like this.
In the last few years they have been generating a lot of buzz. Champagne Barons de Rothschild is now beloved in over 90 countries, the exclusive Champagne supplier of Sail GP (the F1 of Sailboat racing!), and the official Champagne partner of Ritz Carlton.
We offered their Rare Collection vintage Champagnes in the past, but the Triptyque is entirely different in concept – the best of a vintage in Champagne in a glass, tying together complex tree fruit, citrus, pastry, and mineral notes in one taut linear package that is oh-so-long!
New to the market - Today, for under $100 a bottle! And you won’t find it for that price anywhere else!
When they decided to get into the Champagne business, rather than buy an existing house (which they could have done), they decided to build their own from the ground up. As Antonio Galloni on Vinous wrote for the inaugural vintage: “Barons de Rothschild (note the plural of Barons) brings together the three branches of the family – Baron Philippe Sereys de Rothschild of Mouton, Baron Eric de Rothschild of Lafite and Baron Benjamin de Rothschild and his wife, Ariane, of Clarke and the Edmond de Rothschild Group. The wines I tasted made it clear this is a serious and highly ambitious project.”
And Galloni also points out, what we have here is “an especially vinous Champagne that is also a perfect example of a trend …wines that expose the more adventurous style often seen in the most progressive of the grower Domaines.”
In his 93+ Point review, Jeb Dunnuck praises the Triptyque’s “clean mineral undercurrent tying the wine together very nicely,” going on to metion, “This is a refreshing, bright style of Champagne with the ability to age over the coming 10 or more years.”
It is the inaugural release, the passion project of Chef de Cave Guillaume Lété. French for triptych, a painting or work of art in three panels, he conceives of it as a window into the vintage through three top Grand Crus from the three main regions of Champagne – Avize in the Côte des Blancs, Ambonnay in the Montagne de Reims, and Aÿ in the Vallée de la Marne. The blend of 50 % Chardonnay from Avize gives the wine precision and focus, 25 % Pinot Noir from Ambonnay adds richness and power, while 25% Pinot Noir from Aÿ provides plushness and finesse. A different vintage will be released every year, continuing to blend grapes from these site to highlight the variation from vintage to vintage while delivering only the best it has to offer.
The 2018 vintage? It was a legendary vintage! A wet winter provided enough water for the grapes to thrive during the long, hot summer, leading to ripe fruit, full-bodied Champagnes with a pleasing fleshy texture. Though high yields led some Champagnes to be a little lighter in style, here the use of fruit from top vineyards gives enough density to match the wines sophistication.
To the Rothschilds, their Champagnes are exactly like their other flagships in Bordeaux and the new world. No expense spared. All to ensure one thing: the name on the bottle, and the shield of honor accompanying is never compromised. Since Napoleonic times, they have been the noblest banking family in Europe, and all their enterprises are built on principles of the family motto: Concordia, Integritas, Industria (Unity, Integrity, Commerce). When they ‘banked’ on Champagne at the turn of this century, everyone knew they would get it right.
