If Lobo is new to you, maybe you heard of their Wulff Vineyards before. Per Napa Valley Life “Lobo sells 75% of their fruit to other ultra-premium wineries like The Prisoner, Mumm, and Lewis Cellars, however, they keep select rows or blocks for their own label.”
They were planted and are tended by Mario Bazán of Opus One and Robert Mondavi’s To-Kalon fame. Bazán had helped put Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars on the map, where Lobo winemaker Victoria Coleman also started while at UC Davis. Both trained under the late visionary Warren Winiarski, who inspired them for life. Coleman worked at (gulp) Château Mouton Rothschild too, where she further honed her skills prior to getting to Lobo.
The Napa Valley Register quotes Opus One’s Michael Silacci: “She is the most under-the-radar winemaker viticulturist I know. Her veil of calm belies an intense nurturing of the vineyard and of her wines, thoughtful in her pursuit of perfection, and her quest to allow her wines tell the story of place.” Concluding that “this poetic nature of Coleman’s work isn’t lost on typical wine drinkers either, though, with those in and out of the industry expressing awe of her natural grasp over the cellar.”
Lobo makes just two Cabernets. One from the valley floor and one from the rocky volcanic hillsides of Atlas Peak at 1,300’ elevation. The latter is what we have here. And while both were excellent, the mountain-bred Cab shows SO much more complexity, structure, and vitality.
Youthfully purple-hued with an opulent, full-bodied style. Black and blue fruits, wild herbs, tilled earth, and spice-driven aromas and flavors lead. The finish boasts flawless balance, a pure, layered mouthfeel, and ripe tannins. Singing today, with a couple of decades of life ahead, savor or cellar it.
Oh, and as if all those accolades are not enough, Wine Spectator named Lobo a “Standout Producer from Atlas Peak” along with Antica, Pahlmeyer, and Kongsgaard, while Robb Report put this among “One of 7 Best Cabernet Sauvignons from Atlas Peak.” We agree wholeheartedly.
Like a good Lobo (wolf in Spanish) would, do not let this one get away.
94 Points – Antonio Galloni’s Vinous “Laced with hints of iron, red-toned fruit, rose petal, white pepper, slate and granite. This intensely mineral, savory Cabernet has a ton of character. It's classic Atlas Peak all the way. Drink 2024-2036.”
94 Points – The Wine Independent “Deep garnet-purple in color, it starts a little closed and broody, offering notes of fertile loam, tar, and black olives to begin, before opening out to classic cassis and plum preserves scents, with a touch of anise. The medium to full-bodied palate is tightly knit, with bags of youthful fruit and firm, ripe, grainy tannins, finishing with a refreshing lift. Drink 2024-2042.”
94 Points – International Wine Report “This 2021 Lobo Cabernet Sauvignon from the Atlas Peak estate has a wonderful nose that leaps out of the glass. Beautiful aromas of vibrant red fruits, black cherry, and black tea tantalize the nose. This wine excites your palate with notes of black currants, raspberry, cherry and hints of black olive. This is a well-balanced wine with medium tannins, leading you into a smooth, lengthy finish.”
