Puligny Montrachet

Home to the legendary Montrachet Grand Cru, Puligny-Montrachet produces Burgundy's most refined white wines. Elegance, precision, and mineral intensity define these Chardonnays, which set the global benchmark for the variety.

Puligny-Montrachet represents Chardonnay at its most ethereal. Where neighboring Meursault offers richness, Puligny delivers precision. These are wines of crystalline clarity, where mineral notes and citrus fruit take precedence over butter and toast. The village's glory is Montrachet itself—a 7.9-hectare Grand Cru shared with Chassagne that has been called the greatest dry white wine on Earth. The name means "bald mountain," referring to the steep, sun-drenched slope where nothing but vines can grow. Chevalier-Montrachet (above) and Bâtard-Montrachet (below) complete the family. What makes Puligny special is its terroir: thin topsoil over pure Bathonian limestone, creating wines of extraordinary tension and length. The best examples start closed and austere, requiring years to reveal their complexity. At maturity, they offer an almost electric minerality alongside white flowers, citrus, and stone fruit. The village also contains exceptional Premier Crus, with Les Pucelles, Les Folatières, and Clavoillon offering a more accessible route into Puligny's elegance.

Climate & Terroir

Continental with good sun exposure. Thinner soils and more exposed limestone bedrock than Meursault. Drainage is excellent, preventing root rot.
